Lesotho like the rest of the world is prone to the negative impacts of global warming. Extreme temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns characterized by long drought spells and flash floods are some of the weather patterns that have a negative impact on the national infrastructure and household food productivity. Protecting our Common Home is therefore key in minimizing the adverse impacts of climate change. Reducing carbon emission and increasing carbon sinks are critical to minimize global warming.
“Many of the poor live in areas particularly affected by phenomena related to warming, and their means of subsistence are largely dependent on natural reserves and eco-systemic services such as agriculture, fishing and forestry. They have no other financial activities or resources which can enable them to adapt to climate change or to face natural disasters, and their access to social services and protection is very limited.” Laudato Si Article 25.
Empowering communities to protect our environment and take part in climate change response.
Caritas Lesotho’s approach encompasses several key components to drive positive change within communities. We prioritize raising awareness through targeted campaigns and educational initiatives, seeking to shed light on critical social, environmental, and health issues affecting vulnerable populations.
In close collaboration with communities, we establish and/or revive local structures at the grassroots level. These community-based structures play a pivotal role in spearheading the implementation of activities, fostering a sense of ownership and empowerment among community members.
Through this integrated approach, Caritas Lesotho collaborates with communities to build resilience, promote self-reliance, and foster sustainable development.
To ensure sustainable development, we invest in capacity building through comprehensive training programs. Community members receive essential training in natural resources management, group organization, and community monitoring and evaluation (M&E). These skills empower communities to make informed decisions, efficiently manage resources, and evaluate project progress accurately.
